To The Girl With An Anxious Heart
This morning, I woke up with a cloud of anxiety and sadness looming over me. In an attempt to shake it off, I tried with all my might to not give it any attention. I worked out, and went to fill up my water bottle when it dropped on the floor and broke in half! Did I mention that this was a Nalgene bottle? These things are supposed to be unbreakable, right?! As I soaked up the 32 oz of water that spilled all over the kitchen floor, I began to fall apart, just like my “indestructible” water bottle.
The enemy took such a tight hold on my heart that he made me believe that I was completelybroken. He whispered lies into my ear about my decisions, my body, my ministry and worth, and just wrecked havoc on my confidence. As I stood there, loading wet towels into the washing machine, I couldn’t help but wonder if Tanner knew the crazy woman that he had married. I wondered how long he’d be able to handle my issues before he couldn’t take it anymore.
My husband came down from his office and immediately scooped me up. I told him the fears and worries that I had, and he called them out for what they were - lies. He held me and reassured me that he was never going anywhere, no matter what. After a good ugly cry, I felt a little bit better, but the cloud still was there.
I pulled myself together enough to get to my favorite coffee shop where I like to get my work done. As I’m sitting here, trying to get work done, I realized that the worry and anxiety that I have is all based on WORLDLY things: my weight, health, marriage, purpose, relationships, success...when I begin to put my security in these things, I know that I will always be let down. The world will never satisfy me.
The only one who can ever satisfy me is the Lord. So here I am, blasting worship music in my earbuds, holding back tears of breakthrough joy. All of my hope, all of my joy is in Him. In the midst of my worry, I turn to worship Him, and He turns my fear into FREEDOM.
So, m’love...if you have an anxious heart, write down exactly what it is that you are worried about. Chances are, it has something to do with the things of this world. Then, replace your worldly worry with His WORD.
Here are 10 of my favorite verses to ease your heart:
And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Luke 12:22-35
“...Do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” Luke 12:11-12
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you. I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” Psalm 55:22
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” 1 John 4:18
"Even though I walk through the darkest valley,I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." Psalm 23:4
“We can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’” Hebrews 13:6
“We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
